More Mevagissey

I had a wonderful response to the post I did recently regarding our family visit to this little port.  In that post I mentioned I had a little wander off to the outer harbour on my own with my faithful spaniel.  It was a slow meander to drink in the colours and smells but I was also struck by the multitude of textures - both man made and natural, which added interest and beauty to this little place.  I hadn't wanted to overload my previous post with photography (with things that perhaps only some find beautiful) but as many of you enjoyed it I thought I'd share some more?

 

I do so love the beautiful turquoise colours of the seaside.  Even the ropes used are turquoise tones and I love that - function and beauty together.  Just wonderful.

And of course, my faithful friend, Milo.  He is such a fabulous family dog and a great companion while I take random pictures - which you've got to love!!

Weston Sand Sculpture Festival - Hollywood Theme

Last year one of my earliest blog posts was of our visit to the 2012 Sand Sculpture Festival.  We took advantage of the sunny morning on Bank Holiday Monday and ventured out to the sea front to visit the festival this year.  There has been all sorts of reports locally of how the bad weather has had a really negative impact on the longevity of the sculptures this year and many have had to be repaired.

Despite this, we really enjoyed our visit - it's really fascinating to see all the sculptures various artists come up with and what they are inspired by within a theme.

The theme was Hollywood for the 2013 Sand Festival. 

...This was by far my favourite sculpture this year.  Just look at the detail in those eyes.  They seem to capture such animosity!











The littlie's favourite was this Batman and Hulk sculpture. 

It was fantastically detailed and enormous!  Poor Hulk is really getting a bashing from the wind as well as Batman!!

 

But then - just look at the size of King Kong!  You can see bits of damage to the sculpture around his face but he remained extremely impressive in reality.

 A large area was dominated by characters from Harry Potter!

Jaws was a little scary ;0)












 



And Gollum added another 'Baddie' to the mix.  The face and eyes are so expressive - and just look at those fingernails!

The children enjoyed a number of the cartoon themed sculptures - Sid from Ice Age and Toy Story 3 above.  Little B found it funny that the bad teddy (sorry - forgot his name) had a bird 'doo doo' on his head.  Karma I guess ;0)



ET was phoning home too...

The Titanic was sinking into the sand - I so wanted to do the cliched "I'm King of the World" pose but wasn't brave enough to do so in front of the throngs of people that were also viewing the sculptures!



























A Velociraptor took centre stage in a sculpture comprising lots of different elements from Jurassic Park.

There were lots of other sculptures too - James Bond, Clint Eastwood, Darth Vader and a sand sculpted Hollywood sign to name but a few so all in all...

Despite all my efforts, due to half term holidays and my Big Girl being off school with a chest infection this week I am behind on my blog posting!  Hey ho - In June I celebrate the first anniversary of this blog and am about to launch the Carry It Forward (although I'm majorly intimidated to offer my home made goodies to you talented people!) So please do watch out for those posts as I'd love you to participate!

A Simple Sunny & Sandy Sunday

During a weekend visit to my mum's home in Cornwall last weekend, we took a trip to Polkerris near Par.  It's not a typical beautiful white sandy beach but it is easilly accessible (my mum's progress on recovering from her knee replacement is very slow) and is in a lovely cove with a small harbour and a pub on the shoreline (for hot chocolates when needed of course). 

The sun was shining so we packed a lunch hamper (or rather hessian sack) and made for the beach still early in the morning.  The children were SO keen to get into the sea.  Even with their wetsuits the water is very cold but they were adament that it wasn't 'too' cold.

R found a piece of drift wood, which served fantastically as a surf board for her werewolf. 

Yep, not girly at all but it kept them happy for HoURS!  Little B had a margarine tub and his pirates sailed happily in that. 

 

It was wonderful to see them so content in a completely timeless fascination with the waves and different object's ability to float!  Apparently, Granny has a couple of toy boats in her cupboard at home so the werewolf's 'boat' will be upgraded!!  We have had to keep the piece of drift wood though - R wouldn't leave it behind so it now is part of our essential beach equipment!!

It is a fabulously active water way.  There is a sailing school and many water sports focus around the harbour - gig rowing, wind surfing etc means there is always plenty to watch!


The sun shone (thank you Lord!) as it's not done that much in England recently.  The wind was still keen but this helped the flags to fly magnificently and also enabled the water sports to be enjoyable for all!


We found a patch of shells to search amongst and found some cowlries and sea glass - both treasure in my and R's eyes!  The former was always a challenge set by my mum to find when I was a child and classed as our meal tickets - when we found one we were guaranteed a good tea!!  We found two on this visit so us girls were alright ;0)

These things combined made for a glorious day by the sea.  With our household budget not allowing a summer holiday I am so thankful that we can enjoy such beautifully relaxed days with my favourite people. 

What's not to LoVE?  We're hoping to spend some more quality time by the sea if the weather allows!

Weston super Mare Fun Run

Last Sunday saw our little family down on the sea front once more.  This time it was for Ben and the children to participate in the children's version of the Tough Ten. 


The circuit was a mile long and entries were children from 5 -16years.  The children kicked off before the more challenging adult race!  There were mainly entries from local athletics clubs and we were surprised that there weren't more fun runners really.

It's the first year we've been able to enter as little B is now just 5 but they really enjoyed running together.

Ben has run a number of marathons and half marathons now and the children were keen to run like daddy!  He was so proud to run the race with them.  We made sure the emphasis was on fun and exercise rather than anything competitive.  However, the entrance fee and the sponsorship we raised went to Diabetes UK and the Children's Hospice respectively.

I cheered them in to the finish line and they were SO delighted to receive a medal for their efforts.  My goodness the pride just swelled in their chests is was joyous to see.

They both took their medals in to 'show and tell' in school on Monday and share their experience with their friends. 

Hopefully March will bring the completion of R's bedroom 'pretty filter', some crochet and a furniture makeover.  All are works in progress so watch this space!  Are you planning anything fun in March?!
